Noise Abatement Procedures

There is sensitivity to aircraft noise in the residential areas that abut the Pease Airport, particularly during the nighttime hours.  The following procedures have been developed to reduce the noise impact on these residential areas and, when followed, have proven to be quite effective.

  1. Runway 34 is the preferential runway when the tailwind component is less than five knots.

  1. Between 2200 and 0659, runway 16 is the preferential runway for takeoffs and runway 34 is the preferential runway for landings so long as the tailwind component is less than five knots on either runway.

  1. Fly the Pease Two Departure as published.

  1. Approach and landing practice is not authorized between the hours of 2100 and 0659 daily and until 1200 on Sundays.

  1. On other than published instrument approach procedures (i.e. in the VFR pattern), aircraft should be established on final approach at least two nautical miles from the runway threshold at a minimum altitude of 700 feet MSL.  Avoid close in base legs and short approaches.

  1. Maintenance ground run-ups of aircraft engines are permitted only in locations approved by the Airport Management Department.

  1. Avoid over flight of the City of Portsmouth below 2500 feet MSL.

  1. On departure, get as high as possible as soon as possible.  On arrival, stay as high as possible as long as possible.

  1. Avoid overshooting final, particularly on Runway 34, as it will take you over a densely populated area.

  1. Avoid dragged in final approaches and descending to MDA earlier than necessary.  Both require high power settings at low altitudes.

  1. Avoid over flying densely populated areas.

  1. Fly neighborly.  Do everything possible to minimize aircraft noise without compromising safety or violating air traffic control procedures.
